The trailer for Christy was recently launched, and people are shocked to see the never-before-seen look of Sydney Sweeney playing the titular character. As the Euphoria actress’ new avatar in the trailer has generated a buzz among people, there is also curiosity about the character of ‘Christy Martin’ that Sydney is essaying in the film.
Nicknamed as ‘The Coal Miner’s Daughter’, Christ Martin is a real-life boxing legend whose life has been filled with ups and downs. From surviving a deadly attack to turning into a motivational speaker, here’s the life story of boxer, Christy Martin.
Christy Martin’s story: Born in a family of coal miners, pioneered women’s participation in sports
Christy Martin was nicknamed ‘The Coal Miner’s Daughter’ as to her father, grandfather and even brother, all worked in mining. Christy wore this nickname proudly and became a pioneer figure in popularising and removing the stigma surrounding women’s participation in sports in the U.S.A. She was born on June 12, 1968, in West Virginia, and showed good skills as a baseball and basketball player. As a result, she also attended college with the help of a basketball scholarship.
As per a Style report, Christy’s first experience with boxing was when she entered the ring for the first time. To win a dare from her friends, she participated in the Toughwoman competition in West Virginia. Withought any prior experience, Christy won her first fight. This victory prompted her to begin her boxing career and she participated in more Toughwoman contests. Christy then began training professionally with a coach, Jim Martin, who later became her husband.
Christy Martin and James Martin’s tumultuous married life and attempt to murder attack on the boxer
Christy Martin married her coach and husband at the age of 22, when he was 47, in 1991. The boxer called her marriage to James Martin as one of convenience. Christy also accused him of being emotionally and physically abusive along with fuelling her drug addiction to control her. All the money she earned from winning contests was also used by her husband, James, to maintain a lavish lifestyle, claimed Christy.
In her memoir Fighting for Survival, Christy mentioned that she was aware of being a lesbian around the 6th grade. In high school, she was also in a relationship with her basketball teammate, Sherry Lusk. After years of being in a reportedly toxic marriage, Christy reconnected with her high-school girlfriend in 2010 and later made the decision to leave her husband. However, after telling James that she wanted a divorce, her husband violently attacked her.
As per reports, James Martin stabbed Chrsity multiple times and shot her as well, before leaving her for dead. Miraculously, Christy survived the attack. Her ex-husband, on the other hand, was arrested and found guilty of attempted murder. He was sentenced to serve 25 years in jail in 2010, but passed away in 2024.
Christy Martin married former rival, Lisa Holewyne
Christy Martin had met Lisa Holewyne in 2001. They have known each other since she defeated Lisa in the preliminary bout or the heavyweight boxing match between Hasim Rahman and Lennox Lewis. The exact year they started dating is unknown, however, Christy married her former rival, Lisa, on November 25, 2017. They have been together ever since.

The trailer of Christy Martin’s biopic, Christy dropped on September 11, 2025 and shows Sydney Sweeney playing the role of the boxer. Taking to her Instagram handle, Christy expressed excitement on being able to tell her story through the biopic and having Sydney play her role. Heaping praises on the actress, Christy wrote:
