Mumbai Crime Branch officials have arrested two brothers from Telangana for stealing two rifles and 40 live rounds from a high-security zone, a sensational case that was first reported at the Cuffe Parade police station last week on September 6.

According to DCP (Crime Branch) Raj Tilak Roshan, CCTV footage revealed how the crime unfolded. One of the accused stole the rifles and cartridges while his brother waited outside to carry them away. The two then boarded a train, travelling via Pune before fleeing to Telangana.

Given the seriousness of the case, police formed nine special teams and relied on both technical surveillance and human intelligence. After an intensive chase, the brothers – identified as Rakesh and Umesh – were finally nabbed in Telangana. Preliminary interrogation showed that Rakesh had been working in Mumbai since last year and was previously employed in Kochi.

Initially registered as a case of theft, police have now added charges under the Arms Act. Investigators are questioning the duo to determine their exact motive behind the crime.

Police noted that the area where the brothers were arrested has a history of Naxalite activity. Investigators are therefore probing all angles, including the possibility of a larger network being involved.
