Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has become the preferred candidate of Gen Z to lead an interim government, following large-scale protests and political unrest. More than 5,000 young people joined a virtual meeting to choose the country’s next leader. The death toll from the September 8 protests climbed to 30. Demonstrators torched key government buildings, stormed prisons, and clashed with security forces in violence that left over 1,000 injured.

    Here are the latest developments

    • Sushila Karki said she is prepared to lead, stressing that the youth trusted her to guide the country through transition.

    • Karki, aged 72, was Nepal’s first female Chief Justice, known for her integrity and anti-corruption stance. She served as Chief Justice in 2016 and played a key role in the 2006 constitutional drafting.

    • The army imposed a curfew in Kathmandu, guarded streets, and warned of strict action against vandalism, as efforts continue to restore order and negotiate with protesters.

    • In a Facebook post, Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, another potential candidate for the post endorsed Karki, declined interim leadership, and called on the President to dissolve Parliament, stressing he would lead only through elections.

    • The death toll from the September 8 protests climbed to 30, with 1,033 injured in violence that saw arson, attacks on officials’ homes, and the storming of Parliament, Singha Durbar, and the Supreme Court.

    • Flight operations at Kathmandu International Airport resumed after more than 24 hours of suspension, with Air India making the first landing and Nepal Airlines operating the first outbound flight.

    • At least five juvenile inmates were killed in clashes with security forces, while over 7,000 prisoners reportedly escaped from jails nationwide during the unrest, media reports said.

    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China, and other global leaders urged restraint and stability. Nepal’s former King Gyanendra supported the youth’s anti-corruption cause but condemned the bloodshed.

    • Among the injured was Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar, wife of former PM Jhala Nath Khanal, who remains hospitalized after a house fire during the unrest.

    • India’s Civil Aviation Ministry asked Air India and IndiGo to run extra flights between Delhi and Kathmandu to evacuate stranded Indians.
