From KKR to Team India: How Gautam Gambhir backs players when they themselves don’t

When you think of Gautam Gambhir as a coach, it is easy to picture an intense, intimidating figure obsessed with winning. During his playing career, he was not one to back down from a fight. Just ask the likes of Virat Kohli and Shahid Afridi.

But behind the stern exterior lies something far more valuable: an ability to instil confidence in his players when they need it most. Time and again, Gambhir has shown he is willing to back his cricketers even when they doubt themselves.

For 23-year-old Harshit Rana, Gambhir’s arrival at Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 was a turning point. By the end of the season, Rana had enjoyed his best IPL campaign, taking 19 wickets and helping KKR to their third title.

“He told me before the season, ‘You will play all 14 matches, no matter how many runs you concede. Even if you get hit for 70 or 80, keep your head up and stay aggressive,’” Rana told ESPNCricinfo. “That was the moment my confidence shot up. I could express myself without fear.”

It was a similar story for Sanju Samson, who recalled how Gambhir’s faith lifted him during a low point. Before Gambhir’s involvement, Samson had endured a barren spell marked by inconsistency with the bat and uncertainty around his India place. That changed when he was trusted with opening the batting for the T20I side.

“Gauti bhai noticed I was feeling down after missing chances,” Samson told Ravichandran Ashwin on his podcast. “I said I had messed up, and he just said, ‘So what? Only if you get 21 ducks will I drop you.’ Those words hit differently. When a coach talks like that, your belief goes up instantly.”

For Varun Chakravarthy, whose career stalled after the 2021 T20 World Cup, Gambhir’s support was equally crucial.

“He told me, ‘No matter who ignores you, I will keep you in my plans.’ That gave me huge confidence,” the leg-spinner revealed to RevSportz. “He brings a warrior mindset into the dressing room — something that worked at KKR and even during the Champions Trophy.”

The common thread in these stories is Gambhir’s unwavering faith. He doesn’t just hand players opportunities; he gives them the room to fail without fear of being discarded. For a generation competing under intense scrutiny, that trust is transformational.

Perhaps that is why Gambhir, so often portrayed as hard-edged, is emerging as one of Indian cricket’s most reassuring figures — the mentor who backs you even when you stop backing yourself.
