The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a unique initiative to address the growing disputes over language across India. Against the backdrop of tensions seen in states like Maharashtra and Karnataka, the state’s BJP-led government has decided to introduce special courses on Indian languages in its universities.

The Higher Education Department confirmed that 17 universities across Madhya Pradesh will begin offering courses in major Indian languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Oriya.

This step, authorities believe, will not only equip students with new skills but also foster national integration.

    PROMOTING UNITY THROUGH LANGUAGES

Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar described Madhya Pradesh as the “heartland” of India that now aspires to become the centre of linguistic unity.

He said, “The government’s objective is that if the youth of the state goes to any state or region of the country, they can communicate with the residents there with ease and intimacy.”

India currently has 12 national and 22 regional languages. The government plans to introduce 12 to 15 of these in universities starting from the current academic session.

Officials believe the scheme will help reduce conflict based on language differences and encourage cultural dialogue.

    BENEFITS FOR YOUTH

Many young people in Madhya Pradesh move to other states for education, jobs, or business, but often face difficulties due to language barriers.

By learning regional languages, students will not only enhance their employment opportunities but also gain exposure to the cultures and traditions of different regions.

Parmar added that the initiative will make Madhya Pradesh a role model for other states, setting an example of respect for diversity.

    OPPOSITION’S CRITICISM

The opposition Congress party has criticised the move, calling it a publicity stunt aimed at electoral gains.

Senior Congress leader Manak Aggarwal argued that teaching other languages in the state “will not have any practical benefit” and alleged that the scheme will not go beyond paperwork.

Congress leaders also pointed out that earlier Hindi-medium initiatives had little impact, and expressed doubts that this new scheme would be any different.
