Bangladesh to export 1,200 tonnes of hilsa to India, half of last year’s quota

Bangladesh has decided to allow the export of 1,200 tonnes (1.2 million kilogram) of hilsa fish, locally known as ilish, to India ahead of Durga Puja, though the quantity is nearly half of what was permitted last year, as per a report by Bangladesh daily Prothom Alo.

The country’s Ministry of Commerce issued an order on Monday, fixing the minimum export price at USD 12.50 (Rs1,520.73) per kg. Exporters have been asked to submit fresh applications along with trade licences, tax documents, and clearance from the Department of Fisheries by September 11, Prothom Alo reported.

Bangladesh has traditionally permitted limited shipments of hilsa — the most sought-after fish during Durga Puja — mainly to West Bengal, where demand soars during the festive season. In 2024, the government had cleared 2,420 tonnes for export after initially considering 3,000 tonnes.

The new directive has capped this year’s supply at 1,200 tonnes, with strict conditions that exporters cannot transfer permits, exceed the approved quota, or subcontract the consignments. Authorities have also reserved the right to halt shipments at any stage.

Announcing the decision, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah posted on X: “Ilish coming! Bangladesh Govt just decided to export the quintessential fish to India ahead of festival seasons, as a mark of enduring friendship.”

The move comes against the backdrop of strained relations between New Delhi and Dhaka following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
