Sanjay Dutt was born to the legendary Bollywood power couple, Nargis and Sunil Dutt. However, despite being born into an affluent family, the actor’s life has been one marked by struggles and numerous ups and downs. From losing his mother and first wife to terminal illness, to serving a jail term, Sanjay’s life story has been paved with twists and turns. As the actor has opened up about his five years in Yerwada Jail in The Great Indian Kapil Show, here’s a throwback to his oldest daughter, Trishala Dutt, talking about her father being jailed.
When Trishala Dutt revealed that she had to be strong for her family after Sanjay Dutt was jailed
Trishala Dutt is the only child of Sanjay with his late first wife, Richa Sharma. After decades of legal troubles, the actor was sentenced to serve six years in prison and was sent to the Yerwada jail in Pune in 2013. In an interview with Hindustan Times in 2015, Trishala revealed how she dealt with this situation. Sanjay’s daughter stated that she knew that she won’t be able to talk to her father regularly for the next 2-3 years. Hence, Trishala, who was nearly 25 at the time, realised that it was time to handle the situation with maturity and be strong for her family and herself. In the interview, she was quoted as saying:
“When he went to jail, and I knew I wasn’t going to hear regularly from him for the next two-three years, that’s when I realised that it’s time to grow up. Yes, I was sad, but I had to be strong for my family and myself.”
Trishala Dutt also stated that everyone expected her to cry publicly when her father was jailed, since she had grown up in the limelight of Bollywood, and everyone had seen her as a baby. However, Trishala said that she wasn’t a child anymore and the situation had made her very strong. She shared:
“I’m not a child anymore, and I think some people forget that, and expected me to cry publicly, because everyone has seen me in my baby stages while I was growing up in Bollywood, but that’s not who I am anymore. Tough situations really strengthen you as a person.”
Trishala Dutt’s recent cryptic note on Instagram hinted towards a feud with Sanjaya Dutt
Practising as a psychotherapist, Trishala Dutt has been very vocal in spreading awareness about mental health and dealing with emotional stress. However, Trishala’s recent note on social media talked about how ‘not everyone who shares your blood deserves a place in your life’ has sparked specualtions about a possible feud with her father, Sanjay Dutt. The psychotherapist’s message encourages people to cut off their family if they are manipulative and hurtful. A part of the note read:
“You’re allowed to choose your mental health over preserving the family image. Because ‘family’ is not a free pass to mistreat, manipulate, or guilt-trip you. You DO NOT owe continued access to anyone who keeps hurting you even if they raised you. When a parent cares more about how the family appears to the world than how it actually feels to live in it, that’s a problem.”

Sanjay Dutt and Bollywood actress, Richa Sharma had tied the knot in 1987. A year later, they welcomed their first and only child together, Trishala. Several years later, after losing his mother, Nargis, to cancer, tragedy struck Sanjay again when he lost Richa to a brain tumour in 1996. After this, their daughter, Trishala, was sent to her maternal grandparents in the U.S.A. and grew up there. After the death of his first wife, Sanjay married twice more. The second marriage ended in divorce. However, the actor is still going strong with his third wife, Manayata Dutt, and the two were blessed with twins, Shahraan and Iqra, in 2010.
