The Uttar Pradesh police arrested a rape and murder accused after a brief encounter in Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow on Saturday. The accused, identified as Anuj Rawat, was wanted in several cases, including the alleged rape and killing of a 45-year-old woman.
Police said Rawat opened fire when a team tried to intercept him. In retaliation, officers returned fire and managed to overpower him. He was found in possession of a country-made pistol. Injured during the exchange, Rawat was taken into custody and later admitted to hospital for treatment under police supervision.
Officials confirmed that multiple cases of rape, murder, and other offences are pending against him.
WOMAN ATTEMPTS SELF-IMMOLATION NEAR CM RESIDENCE
In a separate incident, a woman from Noida attempted to set herself on fire outside Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s residence in Lucknow, alleging inaction by police in her rape complaint. Alert members of the anti-immolation squad intervened and saved her life.
The woman had lodged a rape complaint in Noida’s Shalimar Garden police station on June 24. However, the FIR was filed nearly 25 days later, reportedly after the intervention of the High Court. She claimed that despite repeatedly sharing the accused’s location, police took no action.
Frustrated with the alleged negligence, she travelled to Lucknow and tried to immolate herself. The survivor had also warned on Instagram that she would take the step if denied justice.
