The cybercrime police in Noida have arrested a former employee of a private company for allegedly masterminding a large-scale GST fraud.
The accused, identified as Abhinav Tyagi, a native of Moradabad and currently residing in Bisrakh, Greater Noida, is accused of generating fake invoices worth nearly Rs 10 crore and fraudulently claiming Rs 1.8 crore in GST refunds.
Police said Tyagi earlier worked in the accounts section of the company, handling GST and tax return filings. Using his knowledge of the system, he allegedly colluded with an associate to prepare forged invoices and file fraudulent claims before going underground.
The fraud came to light when the company owner grew suspicious and initiated an internal probe, after which a formal complaint was lodged with the cybercrime police station.
According to senior police officer (cybercrime) Shavya Goel, Tyagi was arrested on Saturday. Investigators recovered four mobile phones, eight SIM cards, a laptop, a car, GST-related documents and a rent agreement from his possession.
Police said an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and IT Act, and efforts were on to trace Tyagi’s accomplice.
