    X rolls out encrypted XChat DMs for all, no Premium needed

    X has started rolling out its encrypted direct messaging feature, XChat, to all users. The option was earlier limited to Premium subscribers in beta, but is now being opened up more widely, according to Tech Crunch. XChat works separately from the existing inbox and offers end-to-end encryption. Along with basic messaging, users can share media, start group conversations, pin chats, and mark messages as read or unread. Reports also suggest that a disappearing messages option could be added later.

    For now, users need to opt in to try the feature. On desktop, it can be found in the messages section where a new Chat option appears above message requests. On the mobile app, Chat is available in the main navigation bar on the left, placed just above Communities. Before using it, people have to set a four-digit code, which works as an added layer of security. Only after that can they message others who are also using XChat. The new system does not replace the old inbox completely. Messages on the previous system now appear under a section labelled unencrypted.

    The launch comes as X is also testing other changes to how content appears on the platform. Recently, the company started an experiment to show posts that attract likes from people with different viewpoints. The aim, according to the company, is to break echo chambers and make users more open to posts that do not always match their own opinions.

    Explaining the feature, X said: “Starting today, a subset of Community Notes contributors, representing a wide range of viewpoints, will occasionally see a new callout in the product. The callout shows based on early and limited Like signals on the post. Contributors can then rate and provide feedback about the post, helping to develop an open source algorithm that could effectively identify posts liked by people from different perspectives.”

    In this test, contributors can respond with options such as “I learned something interesting” or “I don’t agree with it.” The company believes this will help identify posts that resonate more broadly.

    “People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes shows people can agree, even on contentious topics. This experimental new feature seeks to uncover ideas, insights, and opinions that bridge perspectives. It can bring awareness to what resonates broadly. It could motivate people to share those ideas in the first place. Ultimately, it could help move the world forward in ways that the people want,” the company added.
