Television actor Arjun Bijlani recently addressed criticism surrounding the popular supernatural series Naagin, which has often been labelled as “regressive” despite its consistent popularity since its debut in 2015. In a new interview, Arjun defended the show’s concept and compared it to global fantasy franchises like Spider-Man.
Arjun Bijlani defends Naagin, says it’s not regressive but fantasy fiction
Naagin, created by Ektaa Kapoor, quickly became a major success on Indian television. Despite drawing strong ratings, it also faced backlash for its fantastical storylines and over-the-top plots. Arjun, who starred in the first season alongside Mouni Roy and Adaa Khan, shared his thoughts on the criticism during an interview with Siddharth Kannan.
Arjun Bijlani Responds to Trolls and Criticism
Calling out those who labelled the show regressive, Arjun said: “It was big not just in small cities but even in Mumbai. It got a TRP of 6 when other shows were running at 2. In fact, it wrapped up at 5. It was even bigger than my previous show Miley Jab Hum Tum. After Naagin, life changed. I’d like to think Season 1 was the best one.”
He further explained why he believed the criticism was misplaced: “Regressive is when you show such things in a realistic setup. Naagin was always promoted as fantasy fiction. What is Spider-Man? Is it real? Is a Naagin real? No, it’s not. So why the backlash? The TRPs proved people were watching it. Only those who were not working had time to troll it. Everyone in this world gets criticised—be it Virat Kohli, Shah Rukh Khan, or Salman Khan. You just need to do your work and keep going.”
About Naagin and Its Legacy
The show revolved around shape-shifting serpents and blended myth, drama, and fantasy. It was written by Neha Singh and Mukta Dhond and directed by Santram Varma. Over the years, Naagin has featured a rotating ensemble cast with each season bringing new leads. The first two seasons starred Mouni Roy, with Arjun Bijlani and Karanvir Bohra, respectively. Subsequent seasons introduced actors like Surbhi Jyoti, Anita Hassanandani, Pearl V Puri, Nia Sharma, Jasmin Bhasin, Surbhi Chandna, Sharad Malhotra, Tejaswi Prakash, Simba Nagpal, and Mahek Chahal.
Naagin 7 Officially Announced
Ektaa Kapoor recently confirms that Naagin 7 is in the works. Sharing the news on Instagram, she thanked fans for their continues support while also acknowledging the mixed feedback the franchise has received. She wrote: “So for all you guys here it is—Naagin 7. My most loyal fans… and probably the ones who troll me the most.”
The cast for the upcoming season has not been announced yet. Despite criticism over the years, Naagin has remains a staple in Indian television, consistently delivering high viewership numbers and a loyal fan base. Arjun Bijlani’s recent comments underline the show’s status as a fantasy series, not bound by realism, but by its appeal to a wide audience.
