Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte is in a legal battle after his estranged wife, Kayla Reid, made serious allegations against him and his intoxication. The couple has been fighting their divorce case, and Kayla’s recent accusations have put Ryan in the spotlight. The Olympic gold medal swimmer failed a drug test earlier.
Ryan Lochte’s estranged Wife, Kayla Reid, accuses him of struggling with drugs
According to court documents, Kayla accused Ryan of consuming drugs in front of their kids. Kayla also said that she discovered empty bags of substances from different areas of her home, including their eight-year-old’s bathroom and her six-year-old’s bed. She also accused Ryan of reckless behaviour and dozing off to sleep while in the car, sitting in the driver’s seat. She has also claimed that Ryan has often fallen asleep while managing the kids.

Kayla further revealed how the swimmer failed two drug tests, along with hair follicle tests for drugs. She accused him of driving their kids to school while being intoxicated. Once, Kayla didn’t let their kids spend the night at Ryan’s home after he refused to take a home drug test. Kayla also revealed his addiction is the reason behind his multiple car accidents.
Amid his addiction, Kayla’s lawyer pleaded with the court to give the custody of the kids to the mother as Ryan was unfit for parenting. He wrote:
“Ryan’s recurring and repeated irresponsible behavior shows he is unfit to exercise shared parental responsibility, and it would be a detriment to the minor children to award the same.”

As Kayla laid serious allegations on Ryan, the Olympic swimmer reacted to the same and told US Weekly that his estranged accusations are completely false. He also revealed that after his car accident in 2023, he fell into depression, which led to substance abuse. He also shared that although he has used drugs at home but had never done the same in front of his kids. Not just this, Ryan also shared that he has never driven his kids while intoxicated.
In the same interaction, Ryan also reacted to Kayla’s claim that he fell asleep in the car. Stating that the environment of his home turned so toxic that he had no other option, Ryan said:
“At times, I would rest in my truck instead of going inside, not because I was impaired, but because the home environment had become overwhelming and very toxic, and I needed and a moment to collect myself before walking in.”

In June 2025, Kayla, a Florida-based real estate agent, announced that she was divorcing Ryan Lochte, describing it as the most challenging decision of her life. After a few weeks, their divorce and legal battle became public, where Kayla accused Ryan of being unfaithful and of his struggle with drugs.
On the other hand, Ryan blamed Kayla for making their divorce proceedings public, making it difficult for the kids. Speaking about the same to the US weekly, he said:
“I have tried desperately to keep these divorce proceedings private and sealed, not to protect myself, but to protect my children from fabricated allegations that could hurt them. Unfortunately, despite that effort, my ex-wife chose to make this matter public, knowing I was already in intensive rehab.”
