The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is working on a proposal to launch a night food bazaar in the city’s central locations. If approved, the bazar will run daily from 10:30 pm to 1 am, featuring 50 to 60 food trucks serving cuisines from across India.

Officials said the market is likely to be set up in Connaught Place’s inner circle, though India Gate is also under discussion.

NDMC vice-chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said that the proposal was put forward by Public Works Department (PWD) minister Parvesh Verma during Wednesday’s council meeting, according to news reports.

The bazaar will not only offer food but also include cultural programmes. State bhawans are expected to participate, bringing their regional cuisines. Menus and themes could also change during festivals, creating a festive atmosphere for residents and tourists alike.

Officials said the council is studying successful models such as Indore’s Sarafa Bazaar and Ahmedabad’s Law Garden before finalising Delhi’s version.

    OTHER KEY PROJECTS APPROVED

At the same meeting, NDMC cleared several civic, cultural, and educational projects:

    • Pollution Control: Automatic mist sprays to be installed at 24 high-pollution spots such as Barakhamba Road, Copernicus Marg, Shahjahan Road, and Baba Kharak Singh Marg. The project will cost Rs 15.29 crore.
    • Smart Classrooms: Rs 7.83 crore approved for setting up 346 smart classrooms for Classes 1 to 5 in NDMC and Navyug schools.
    • School Upgrade: Rs 11.29 crore sanctioned for Navyug School, Pandara Park, including new classrooms and a multipurpose hall.
    • Road Work: Rs 75.14 crore allocated for resurfacing 67 roads, with an additional 10.65 crore earmarked for Connaught Place’s main and radial roads.
    • Drainage: Rs 13.1 crore approved for desilting and debris removal in Kushak and Ring Road drains to improve flood control.
    • Electricity: Rs 9.29 crore to lay low-tension cables in Lodhi Colony to cut power fluctuations.
    • Infrastructure: Plans for a new overbridge outside the Delhi High Court (Gate 5) and multiple art installations in NDMC areas.

The night food bazaar proposal is still under discussion and will be presented formally in the next council meeting. If cleared, Delhi could soon see its first late-night food hub at the heart of the city, offering a safe space for food lovers and tourists.
