Ravichandran Ashwin could reportedly become the first high-profile Indian cricketer to feature in the Big Bash League (BBL), with discussions already underway for the upcoming season of Australia’s premier T20 competition.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Todd Greenberg reached out to Ashwin shortly after the veteran off-spinner announced his IPL retirement last week. Ashwin had previously hinted at exploring opportunities in global T20 leagues, and the BBL could mark his first stop as a freelance cricketer.

Greenberg confirmed the approach and admitted to being excited at the prospect of securing a player of Ashwin’s calibre.

“To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer,” Greenberg told Cricbuzz.

While the finer details are yet to be finalised, CA is exploring how Ashwin could be integrated into the tournament, given that most clubs have already spent their salary cap in the draft. A bespoke arrangement-similar to the per-match deals used for David Warner in the past-could be one potential solution.

Speculation suggests Ashwin could be Melbourne-bound, though nothing has been confirmed. His presence would be a major boost for the BBL, which has long struggled to attract marquee overseas stars. An Indian cricketer of Ashwin’s stature, with multiple IPL titles and World Cup victories to his name, would significantly expand the league’s global reach, particularly across South Asia.

Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, bringing the curtains down on a 16-year-long association with the tournament, within months of retiring from international cricket.

He made the announcement via social media: “They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin posted on X. “Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years, and most importantly the IPL and the BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me.”

The 38-year-old retired from international cricket in December last year during India’s tour of Australia, finishing a decorated career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 537 wickets, behind Anil Kumble (619).

In the IPL, Ashwin was one of the league’s brightest minds, debuting for Chennai Super Kings in 2009. His final appearance also came in the yellow jersey in IPL 2025, after rejoining CSK for Rs 9.75 crore following a decade-long gap.

Over his IPL career, Ashwin featured in 221 matches, taking 187 wickets at an average of 30.22, with best figures of 4/34. With the bat, he scored 833 runs, including a top score of 50, at an average of 13.02.

Ashwin played an integral role in CSK’s title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011 and also turned out for Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals during his career.
