In a significant milestone for India’s indigenous fighter jet programme, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to deliver the first two LCA Mk-1A aircraft in October, sources confirmed.

Despite delays in engine deliveries from the US, HAL has maintained momentum. “Ten aircraft are already built and tested. The first delivery will take place in October, with one aircraft from Nashik already ready for handover,” a top source said.

This month, two additional engines are expected from the US to support the production line. Besides the F404 engines, ten F414 engines have already been delivered, while the broader deal for 113 F404 engines for an additional 97 Tejas Mk-1As has been concluded, with cost negotiations wrapped up.

“Only the signing of the contract remains, which is expected this month. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has already cleared it,” sources added.

Meanwhile, the Mk-1A has completed weapons integration trials, including the firing of Astra and ASRAM missiles. The more advanced LCA Mk2 is scheduled for rollout in 2027, while 83 Mk-1A fighters are now expected by 2029, after a reported delay of four quarters.

HAL officials emphasised that production remains on a “firm footing” despite recent setbacks, such as defect investigations in the ALH fleet operated by the Coast Guard. “The inquiry is expected to close this month,” sources said.

In parallel, HAL is also advancing work on 15 upgraded Su-30s for the Indian Air Force, further consolidating its position in the country’s defence aerospace sector.
