Actor Shantanu Maheshwari, known for his roles in television and films, is set to star in the upcoming Indo-Vietnamese film Love in Vietnam, alongside Avneet Kaur and Vietnamese actress Khả Ngân. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Maheshwari discussed the resurgence of romantic narratives in Bollywood and the influence of Korean dramas (K-dramas) on this trend.
Shantanu Maheshwari reflects on Bollywood’s romance void; says, “We were shifting our medium, but always consuming them”
Maheshwari expressed his belief in the enduring appeal of love stories, stating, “I always believe that love stories will travel and find an audience. It’s just that koi ache se nahi bana raha tha jo ekdum lage dil par and becomes this generation’s biggest love story.” He acknowledged that while Love in Vietnam may not necessarily become the defining love story of the generation, it has the potential to resonate deeply with audiences, depending on their reception.
Reflecting on the evolving landscape of romantic films in India, Maheshwari noted the influence of K-dramas on the audience’s preferences. He remarked, “It’s not as if we had forgotten love stories. We moved to K Dramas. We were shifting our medium, but always consuming them.” This shift indicates a growing inclination towards more heartfelt and nuanced romantic narratives, a trend that Bollywood is beginning to embrace once again.
The success of Saiyaara, a romantic film featuring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Avneet Kaur, further underscores this resurgence. Despite the absence of established stars, the film’s fresh appeal and genuine storytelling led it to gross Rs 576.21 crore, becoming the highest-grossing romantic film in Indian cinema. Maheshwari attributed this success to the audience’s desire for authentic and engaging love stories, stating, “People were hungry for this kind of content. They loved the pairing, the freshness, and accepted it. They gave their love to it.”
As Maheshwari prepares for the release of Love in Vietnam on September 12, he remains optimistic about the future of romantic films in Bollywood. He believes that with genuine storytelling and a deep understanding of the audience’s desires, the industry can once again produce love stories that truly touch the heart.
