NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Mizoram and Manipur on September 13, officials in Aizawl said on Tuesday. The visit comes against the backdrop of prolonged ethnic tensions in Manipur, where clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities have continued for over two years. If confirmed, this will be PM Modi’s first visit to the violence-hit state since the ethnic conflict erupted in May 2023.Mizoram government officials said they had been informed that from Aizawl, the Prime Minister would travel to Manipur. However, they added that the final itinerary is yet to be received. Officials in Imphal, meanwhile, could not confirm the visit.Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 2025 after the resignation of chief minister N Biren Singh. Violence has left thousands displaced, with families struggling to rebuild homes, businesses, and lives amid an uncertain future.Ahead of PM Modi’s visit, Mizoram chief secretary Khilli Ram Meena chaired a meeting with departments and law enforcement agencies to review preparedness. Discussions covered security arrangements, traffic management, reception protocols, and street decoration. At a meeting held at the state secretariat on August 30, the chief secretary instructed officials that the “visit of the VVIP needs to be organised in a grand manner,” according to PTI sources. He directed the police to ensure “security arrangements as per blue book” at the proposed venues –Kangla in Imphal and Peace Ground in Churachandpur district, officials said.During the visit, the newly constructed secretariat and several other completed projects are also expected to be inaugurated, they added. The central government has also planned for employees, farmers, and students to take part in the inaugural function at Lammaul in Aizawl. The Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate a 51.38-km-long railway line connecting Aizawl with Assam’s Silchar, part of the Centre’s Act East Policy aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic integration across the Northeast.
