Ethan Hawke rose to prominence in the film industry through his delicate, grounded and yet profound performances in films like The Dead Poets Society, the Before trilogy, and Boyhood, among others. As a serious actor, Ethan has always wanted to showcase his talents to the audience and be remembered by his iconic films. However, he has still been an unwilling subject of tabloid headlines due to his personal life. Especially, Ethan’s marriage and divorce to Uma Thurman were highly scrutinised. Recently, after years, he has finally made statements about their ‘humiliating’ split.
Ethan Hawke opened up on his split from Uma Thurman after years
Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman met on the sets of their 1996 movie, Gattaca and fell in love. Then they tied the knot in 1998 and welcomed their first daughter, Maya, in the same year. And in 2002, they became parents to their baby boy, Levon. However, soon rumours started circulating around about Ethan’s alleged infidelity, and amid these specualtions the couple got divorced in 2005. Though the former couple remained cordial even during the proceedings, with Uma refusing to badmouth her ex-husband, years later, Ethan has finally shared some insight into the split.
As tabloid culture reached its height in the early 2000s, Ethan and Uma’s failing marriage also became a victim of it. In an interview with GQ UK, the Boyhood actor said that it was ‘humiliating’ even when they were writing positive things about them. Talking about the intense and uncomfortable spotlight on his split from Uma Thurman, Ethan shared:
“It’s humiliating. It’s almost humiliating even when they’re saying positive things.”
Ethan Hawke opened up about on-set romance with Uma Thurman
As Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke had an on-set romance in Gattaca and got married later, the actor was asked why did many stars fell in love with each other while working on movies together. Ethan compared it to a game of Spin the Bottle and said that there is a level of ‘imaginative intimacy’ while working with a co-star on the set. And as it is removed from the ‘dailiness of real life’, falling in love with a co-star feels thrilling and dangerous. Talking about on-set romances, Ethan Hawke said:
“Have you ever played Spin the Bottle? There’s a certain intimacy to the work that we do. Imaginative intimacy. It’s such a high. It feels dangerous and thrilling. It turns the temperature up in your life. It can be like falling in love at summer camp. It doesn’t have any connection to the dailiness of real life. That’s the danger of it.”
