Many people have become the centre of attention worldwide and have garnered a great deal of popularity. However, with popularity comes a lot of scrutiny and a handful of haters as well. But no public figure has ever ruled over the hearts of everyone who saw them like the way Princess Diana did. Though she might have lost the royal title after her divorce from her husband, Prince (now King) Charles, Diana has remained immortal in the hearts of everyone as the ‘People’s Princess’.

Beautiful and kind-hearted, Princess Diana was celebrated by people beyond the U.K. As a result, the whole world came to a standstill when the ‘People’s Princess’ passed away unexpectedly at the age of 36 after a tragic accident. Her two sons, Prince William and Harry, might be estranged now, but once, both of them had shared the same regret over their last phone call with their mother. Here’s what they had to say.

Princess Diana, Prince William, and Prince Harry were supposed to meet each other on the day of her death

Both the royal brothers, Prince William and Prince Harry, have been estranged for quite some time now. After tying the knot with American actress, Meghan Markle, the Duke of Sussex accused his family of being unsupportive and moved to the U.S.A., quitting his royal duties. The brothers might not be on good terms now, but they have always been connected through the grief of losing their mother to an untimely death while they were very young. In the 2017 documentary “Our Mother Diana: Her Life and Legacy, both William and Harry expressed this shared grief.

On August 30, 1997, Prince William and Prince Harry, aged 15 and 12, were spending a few weeks with their father in Scotland. Meanwhile, Princess Diana was in Paris. However, all three of them were looking forward to reuniting with each other on August 31, 1997, unaware of the tragic turn of events that awaited them. Princess Diana met with an accident in Paris, in the early morning of the very day when she was supposed to meet her sons.

Prince William and Harry regret the last phone call they had with Princess Diana

Prince Harry, in the documentary, recalled the last rushed phone call with his mother a day before her death. The brothers were excited to play with their cousins and had a very short phone call with Princess Diana when she called them. Prince Harry revealed:

“If I’d known that that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother, things that I would—the things I would have said to her. I can’t really necessarily remember what I said, but all I do remember is probably regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was.”

Prince William has the exact sentiments as his younger brother about the last time he talked to his mother. He revealed that both he and Harry were in a desperate rush to say ‘goodbye’. Prince William also reminisced that if he had known what was about to happen, he would have talked differently with her. Echoing Prince Harry’s regret, Prince William also shared:

“Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know. ‘See you later’…if I’d known now obviously what was going to happen, I wouldn’t have been so blasé about it and everything else.”

More about Princess Diana’s untimely death

After fifteen years of marriage, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially got divorced in 1996. They were also co-parenting their two sons, Prince William and Harry. A year after the divorce, Princess Diana tragically died at the age of 36 in a road accident on August 31, 1997. She was with her alleged romantic partner at the time, Fayed Dodi, who was also killed in the car crash. Her funeral was telecast in over 200 countries and was watched by a billion people. Due to the philanthropy and charity work done by the ‘People’s Princess’, people continue to mourn her untimely death. In the same documentary, Prince Harry had said:

“There’s not a day that William and I don’t wish that she was still around, and we wonder what kind of a mother she would be now, and what kind of a public role she would have, and what a difference she would be making.”
