Abu Dhabi is set to revolutionize traffic management with the introduction of a new AI-driven smart traffic light system. Designed to address congestion and enhance road efficiency, this cutting-edge technology will dynamically adjust traffic light timings based on real-time data, helping regulate vehicle flow at critical entry points leading to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street.

Smart traffic system to combat congestion

On August 30, 2025, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) announced the deployment of a smart traffic light system aimed at improving vehicle flow and reducing congestion. Using a combination of AI-powered cameras, sensors, and a ramp metering system, the system continuously monitors traffic density across seven main entry points leading to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street. It adapts in real time to traffic conditions, adjusting signal timings and controlling vehicle entry to ensure smoother flow and reduce congestion. The AI-enabled system works by adjusting traffic signals based on traffic volume. During peak traffic hours, it limits the number of vehicles entering the road, preventing congestion. Conversely, during off-peak times, the system allows for a higher vehicle throughput, optimizing road capacity and easing traffic flow. This dynamic flexibility ensures that traffic management remains responsive to changing conditions, improving both road efficiency and safety. According to Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, acting director general of ITC, “The launch of the smart traffic light system to regulate vehicle flow marks a significant step in traffic management.” He emphasized that the system is designed not only to improve traffic fluidity but also to contribute to a more sustainable and efficient transport network across Abu Dhabi.

How it works: real-time monitoring and adaptive signals

The system is equipped with sophisticated sensors and AI-powered cameras placed at key traffic entry points. These technologies constantly track traffic flow, adjusting signal timings in real time based on current traffic density. In addition, a ramp metering system has been activated at critical entry points, controlling the number of vehicles entering the main thoroughfare. If congestion is detected, the system automatically reduces vehicle entry from ramps, ensuring smoother traffic flow on the main road. During periods of lighter traffic, the system allows more vehicles to pass through, preventing unnecessary delays. This dynamic adaptability helps maintain control over traffic, optimizing conditions during both high-volume and lighter traffic periods, and ultimately ensuring a consistent and efficient flow on Abu Dhabi’s roads. ITC has confirmed that the smart signals will only activate when congestion is detected, ensuring that the system remains efficient and responsive throughout the day. As Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli further explained, “Thanks to artificial intelligence and smart systems, we can now monitor and analyze traffic density in real time, enabling us to manage vehicle flow with high precision.” This real-time capability allows the system to enhance traffic fluidity, reduce congestion, and improve overall road efficiency.

    Seven key entry points

The AI-driven traffic light system will be operational at seven key entry points leading to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, which are critical for controlling traffic flow into one of Abu Dhabi’s busiest areas. These entry points are:

    1. Shakhbout bin Sultan Street
    2. Dhafeer Street
    3. Hadbat Al Ghubainah Street (outbound)
    4. Salama bint Butti Street
    5. Al Dhafra Street
    6. Rabdan Street
    7. Umm Yifina Street exit (inbound)

The implementation of this advanced system comes in the wake of increasing traffic pressures due to a rapidly growing population. According to the latest figures from the Statistics Centre–Abu Dhabi (SCAD), the population of Abu Dhabi surged by 7.5% in 2024, reaching a total of 4,135,985 people. Over the past decade, the city’s population has grown by 51%, from 2.7 million in 2014 to more than 4.1 million in 2024. This growth has placed additional strain on the city’s infrastructure, making the introduction of AI-powered traffic management even more critical.

ITC’s role in Abu Dhabi’s transport evolution

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), which has since been rebranded as Abu Dhabi Mobility, plays a crucial role in the emirate’s broader transportation strategy. Established in November 2016, ITC oversees the management of public transport, parking spaces, and roadways, and is responsible for the development of sustainable mobility solutions across Abu Dhabi. The launch of this AI-driven system aligns with ITC’s ongoing efforts to modernize Abu Dhabi’s transport sector. ITC has been at the forefront of adopting innovative technologies, such as electric buses and advanced traffic management solutions, in line with the emirate’s vision to create a smarter, more sustainable mobility ecosystem. Dr. AlGhfeli commented, “This improves traffic fluidity, reduces congestion, and directly contributes to enhancing quality of life and strengthening the sustainability of the emirate’s transport system. In addition to the smart traffic lights, ITC is working on multiple projects designed to enhance road safety and streamline mobility for the city’s expanding population.
