Russia attacked a Ukrainian Navy ship, killing one crew member and injuring several others, Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk on Thursday said. Other details of the attack, including the time and location, have not yet been disclosed. The name of the ship was also not disclosed.
According to a report in Kyiv Independent, Dmytro Pletenchuk informed that most of the crew survived, but several sailors are still missing. Pletenchuk told Ukrainian media that the military is working to deal with the consequences of the attack.
According to the TASS report, this is the first time Russia has officially reported sinking a Ukrainian Navy ship using an unmanned surface vessel. Military analyst Denis Fedutinov said the strike was carried out by a remotely operated boat.
Ukraine has previously targeted Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, with reports of damage to Russian warships. However, Ukrainian naval losses have been rare. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has also targeted civilian vessels in the Black Sea, including ships from other countries.
