An old video of a man confronting a tourist for throwing a plastic bottle into a lake at Nainital’s Zoomland has resurfaced online.

The clip was originally shared on Instagram by Karan Verma on May 8. It shows him questioning the tourist for littering.

“What were you doing right now? Why did you throw that bottle in the lake? You seem like an educated man, but still doing such petty things,” Karan says. The tourist initially denied it, but later asked why it should concern anyone if he had dropped a bottle in the water.

In his caption, Karan described the incident as a “really upsetting experience” in Nainital.
“I saw a guy throw a bottle into the lake. When I confronted him, he admitted it but with a very rude tone. He did not feel guilty about what he had done. As I started recording, he changed his story and became aggressive,” he wrote.

He also expressed disappointment that no one else around intervened. “Not a single person supported me. Nainital is one of the most beautiful places we have, but it hurts to see how casually people disrespect it and how okay everyone else seems to be with it,” he added.

Social media users reacted strongly to the video. “Civic sense dead hai. Aur batameezi full. Shame,” said a user, while another added, “The hatred I have for such people.”

Several users pointed out that the tourist should have apologised, while others stressed the need for strict penalties for littering in tourist destinations.

“There should be boards stating that if plastic is thrown, a heavy fine will follow. In other countries, people obey rules because the fines are high. In India, people take it for granted,” one user commented.

Others praised Karan for calling out the behaviour. “That’s very nice. Keep it up, brother,” a comment read. Another user said, “Bro, proud of you. Keep doing the good work.”

Travelling to scenic destinations is a privilege, and preserving nature’s beauty is a shared responsibility. Ensuring that places like Nainital remain unspoiled will allow future generations to experience their charm as well.
