When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce posted their engagement moment to Instagram on Tuesday, eagle-eyed fans quickly began to dissect every detail of the ring, designed by Kendrick Lubeck of New York-based Artifex Fine Jewelry. While the ultra-romantic jewel boasts a variety of unique elements, it’s the stone that’s got everyone talking: an antique elongated cushion-shaped diamond that experts estimate is sized at roughly 10 carats.
A cushion cut is also often referred to as an old mine cut and dates to the 18th century. While Swift’s diamond is officially an elongated cushion, resulting in its more rectangular shape with rounded corners, the pillow shape of a standard cushion has long been prized for its ability to convey a stone’s brilliance — though in subsequent years it was usurped by the round brilliant diamond, notably when Tiffany & Co. introduced its eponymous ring setting in 1886.
