US President Donald Trump has warned that countries imposing digital taxes on American technology companies would face “subsequent additional tariffs” on their exports to the United States unless those measures are withdrawn.
In a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the policies unfairly target American firms such as Alphabet’s Google, Meta’s Facebook, Apple and Amazon while exempting Chinese tech giants.
“As the President of the United States, I will stand up to countries that attack our incredible American tech companies,” he wrote. “Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American technology. They also, outrageously, give a complete pass to China’s largest tech companies. This must end, and end NOW!”
The President added that unless these countries roll back such laws, he would slap “substantial additional tariffs” on their products and “export restrictions” on American technology and chips.
“America, and American Technology Companies, are neither the ‘piggy bank’ nor the ‘doormat’ of the world any longer. Show respect to America and our amazing tech companies or, consider the consequences!” Trump said.
