It’s one and done for The Waterfront, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming that Netflix has quickly canceled the crime drama after one season.

The show, created by Scream and Dawson’s Creek mastermind Kevin Williamson, only debuted all eight of its episodes on Netflix on June 19, but seemingly failed to find the audience to justify a renewal.

The Waterfront told the story of the Buckleys, a North Carolina family that turns to crime to save their fishery. The show starred Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly Gonzalez, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner and Topher Grace.

The Waterfront had earned comparisons with other popular Netflix family crime dramas Ozark and Bloodline, however, its scores on Rotten Tomatoes were good but not great, with a critics’ score of 68 percent and an audience score of 66 percent. THR‘s review of the show was also mixed, despite singling out Grace’s performance, the reviewer felt that, “Having a solidly above-average cast and occasional bursts of cartoonish violence isn’t enough if the characters are thin and the drama and settings are wholly artificial.”

In an interview with THR, Williamson had talked about the possibilities of a second season for The Waterfront. “[For a season two], we have the Parker family that will come into play. They have such a backstory with the Buckleys already,” Williamson said. “The Parker family would become season two’s big conflict. We’ve only met Emmett [Terry Serpico] and his father. There are more Parker family members and they will prove to be equally as complicated as the Buckleys — and more dangerous than Grady could ever be.”
