Pop culture and politics collided in Washington on Tuesday when President Donald Trump was asked to weigh in on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s surprise engagement. His answer was unexpectedly warm.
“I wish them a lot of luck. I think he’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy, and I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck,” Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting.

The news broke as Trump and his advisers were discussing policy, leaving the White House among the last in Washington to catch up on the viral announcement. A reporter slipped in the engagement question before moving to student visas from China, drawing one of the president’s lighter moments of the day.
Trump’s supportive tone stood out given his history of jabs at the pop star. He once dismissed Swift as “no longer hot” and famously exploded online in 2024 when she endorsed his Democratic rival Kamala Harris. “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” he wrote at the time, after Swift said she backed Harris partly in response to Trump promoting AI-generated images that falsely showed her endorsing him.
The feud carried into Fox & Friends appearances, where Trump said he preferred Brittany Mahomes wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes because she was openly supportive of him.
But on Tuesday, the president left the rivalry aside to acknowledge the couple’s fairytale moment. Swift and Kelce shared the news in a five-photo Instagram post captioned, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” complete with a dynamite emoji.
