If you remember singer and actress Nell Carter, it’s probably because of her years onGimme a Break!, a sitcom that aired on NBC for six seasons from October 29, 1981, to May 12, 1987. Carter played Nell Harper, a live-in housekeeper helping raise the three daughters of widowed police chief Carl Kanisky. The show helped stage actress Carter transition to TV, netting her two Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations over the course of the show’s six-season run.
