Netflix is rarely in support of releasing films traditionally in theaters, yet Kpop Demon Hunters has defined all of its expectations. The animated film is now topping the box office charts in North America despite being a streaming platform release. Over its opening weekend, the animated musical reportedly earned between USD 18- 20 million, surpassing projections for other major releases. Made by Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film has become a massive success, and here is when the viewers are likely to watch a sequel.
When could the possible sequel to Kpop Demon Hunters release?
According to Variety, the directors feel that the universe they built leaves room for expansion. Maggie Kang confirmed that the main stories of ‘Jinu’ and ‘Rumi’ are wrapped up. But there are untold side stories, particularly focusing on ‘Zoey’ and ‘Mira’, that could be explored in a sequel. After a nod from the producers, the time that the film took was long.
Maggie Kang pitched the concept seven years ago, spent two years on initial development, and then waited four more years until its release in June 2025. A follow-up would likely require at least a two-year production timeline. For context, Sony’s Spider-Verse sequels followed a similar extended development process, suggesting fans might see a continuation around 2027 if Netflix greenlights it soon.
Has Netflix confirmed Kpop Demon Hunters 2?
Despite the success, the official confirmation from Netflix and Sony on the sequel is pending. However, the directors have teased the potential sequel, leaving pockets of the story open for exploration. Also, the success of K-pop Demon Hunters can push Netflix to fast-track the project, The Wrap reported that they have left open the possibility of a trilogy and spin-off projects, including a stage musical and live-action. Meanwhile, Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos has hinted at a continuing future for the franchise. During a recent earnings call, Sarandos praised the movie’s performance, storytelling, music, and animation innovation. In his words:
“The fact that people are in love with this film and in love with the music from this film, that will keep it going for a long time.”
