Vera Wang brought her minimalist approach to style to the 2025 U.S. Open‘s opening day on Sunday in New York City, wearing a color-blocked maxidress and carrying a statement bag courtesy of Alaïa.
For the first day of the grand slam competition, Wang opted for a sleeveless scoop-neck maxidress, featuring a gray bodice and empire waistline, which transitioned into a crisp white skirt with a black line of fabric on either side. The hem of the skirt flowed to floor.

Along with the designer’s contemporary dress, Wang carried a statement accessory: the Alaïa Mina 20 bag in Vienne Wave calfskin. The small tote bag featured the Vienne pattern, inspired by precious lace and moucharabieh architectural openwork, per the bag’s description on the brand’s official website.
The small black bag included snap-fastening gusseted sides that expand, along with galvanized silver hardware, a leather pouch and detachable strap for hand or shoulder carry. The small black bag was augmented by Wang’s dramatic black sunglasses.

Tote bags of varying shapes, sizes and designs are having a moment during the 2025 summer season. Popular for their spaciousness and versatility, canvas tote bags, in particular, “are one of the essential building blocks of anyone’s handbag wardrobe,” Marissa Galante Frank, accessories fashion director at Bloomingdale’s, told WWD in July.
“They’re versatile, functional and totally timeless.” That timeless quality added another layer to Wang’s modern minimalist 2025 U.S. Open look, bringing a textural pattern and unique shape to the designer’s attire and accessories for the occasion.
