Joy Banerjee’s acting and political career
Joy Banerjee had a strong passion for acting and started his career in 1980 with Tapan Sinha’s film Dadar Kirti. Despite the rise of other people, Joy remained a fan favourite for his versatile acting and grounded persona, making his loss even more personal and heartbreaking. However, as Joy Banerjee rose in the film industry, his urge to do more and be more led him to politics in the early 2010s. The actor joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and quickly became one of its most recognisable faces in West Bengal.
Joy Banerjee stood in the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and again in 2019, from Birbhum and Uluberia, respectively. However, while he didn’t win a seat, his presence added cultural weight to the party’s outreach in Bengal. His political views, on the other hand, sparked several conversations in the state, raising a range of questions.
