Comedian Reginald “Reggie” Carroll has died at the age of 52 following a shooting in Mississippi on Wednesday, August 20.
In a Facebook update, the Southaven Police Department confirmed that medical personnel treated one victim at the scene of a shooting on Wednesday. Though “life saving techniques” were used on the individual, identified as Carroll, he ultimately succumbed to his “gunshot wounds.”
“One male is in custody and has been charged with the murder of Reginald Carroll,” the update revealed. “Our thoughts [are] with the family of Mr. Carroll. Thank you to the community for their patience and understanding.” (The investigation into Carroll’s death is ongoing.)
Best known for performing stand-up comedy across the country, Carroll also made several TV appearances over the years. Carroll appeared on episodes of Showtime at the Apollo and The Parkers in 2000, per IMDb, as well as played Big Mike in the 2022 TV movie Rent & Go.
His most recent TV credit was an appearance on the 2023 comedy special Knockout Kings of Comedy, which he also produced.
Carroll was known for touring alongside actress and fellow comedian Mo’Nique, who called him her “brother in comedy” in a since-expired Instagram Story tribute, per Deadline. “This is why I say treat people the best you can because you never know if you’ll get a chance to see them again, and the last time me and my brother Reggie, girl, was together,” she wrote. “That’s what it was, an amazing time, being on tour together, being on that road together, what a time, so I have no sad tears because all of our times together was amazing.”
Reggie’s brother, Jonathan Carroll, thanked fans for their well-wishes in a Facebook post on Friday, August 22, writing, “To all who have expressed condolences on the passing of Reggie Carroll, your love has been well received-thank you!!!”
The Baltimore, Maryland, venue Mobtown Comedy posted their own tribute to Reggie via Instagram on Saturday. “Rest in power @comedianreggiecarroll, thank you for being one of the OGs who supported us early on,” the club shared. “The Mobtown family and the Baltimore comedy community are very saddened by this loss of one of our city’s great talents. Sending our prayers to Reggie’s family 🙏🏽🙏🏽.”
Fans also took to social media to share their condolences. “A true giant in laughs, gone too soon but never forgotten,” one person wrote via X on Monday, August 25. Another person wrote, “RIP Reggie! Glad they caught the person.”
“Condolences to his family and friends. May his afterlife be a comedians dream, happiness and laughter,” a different X user posted, while a separate person shared, “This is horrible; my condolences.”
