Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday thanked US President Donald Trump for his Independence Day wishes, praising America’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy wrote, “Dear US President Donald Trump, thank you for your heartfelt congratulations on Ukraine’s Independence Day. We appreciate your kind words for the Ukrainian people, and we thank the United States for standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in defending what is most valuable: independence, freedom, and guaranteed peace.”

We believe that by working together, we can put an end to this war and achieve real peace for Ukraine,” he added.

    TRUMP REITERATES COMMITMENT TO PEACE

Trump, in a letter shared by Zelenskyy on X, congratulated the Ukrainian president on 34 years of independence.

“On behalf of the American people, I extend my congratulations and warmest wishes to you and the courageous people of Ukraine as you celebrate 34 years of independence,” he wrote.

“The people of Ukraine have an unbreakable spirit, and your country’s courage inspires many. As you mark this important day, know the United States respects your fight, honors your sacrifices, and believes in your future as an independent nation,” the letter added.

TRUMP PUSHES FOR DIPLOMATIC END TO WAR

Trump also repeated that he wants to end the war through diplomacy. “Now is the moment to bring an end to the senseless killing. The United States supports a negotiated settlement that leads to a durable, lasting peace that ends the bloodshed and safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty and dignity. God bless Ukraine,” he wrote.

The letter came days after Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and met with Zelenskyy and European leaders. Despite initial steps toward a peace deal, Russian officials said progress has slowed, and a direct meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin is not immediately planned.

Zelenskyy received messages of support from numerous world leaders on August 24, 2025, as Ukraine celebrated its Independence Day amid ongoing challenges.

In addition to the US, he thanked Switzerland for backing Ukraine and exploring expanded political and economic ties. Other leaders extending their congratulations included Armenia, Montenegro, Poland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, China, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Austria.
