Panic spread in Asansol, West Bengal after several dogs were found poisoned to death in the Hirapur Police Station area. The carcasses of the poisoned dogs were found lying on the roadside by the locals.
According to animal lovers, the dogs were fed poison-mixed food at night. A complaint has already been lodged with police in this regard.
According to sources, while the bodies of some dogs have been recovered, many are still missing. Locals allege that the killing was an act of revenge after the dogs hunted down chickens for a local resident’s house.
Police have registered a case and arrested one in connection with the incident. A detailed investigation has been launched into the matter.
The incident comes in the backdrop of Supreme Court revising earlier order directing the Delhi government to remove all stray dogs from the national capital region and shunt them at pounds or dog shelters.
The court on August 22 ruled that sterilised dogs be returned to their territories and only rabid and aggressive dogs be held in shelters. The court also imposed a nation-wide ban on street-feeding.
According to the new ruling, dogs will continue to be rounded up for sterilisation and vaccination, but most will be returned to their original areas. However, those confirmed or suspected to have rabies or showing “aggressive behaviour” will remain confined in segregated pounds or shelters.
