Jaswinder Bhalla, the veteran actor of Punjabi cinema, known for his role as an advocate in Carry on Jatta, bid adieu to the world on August 22, 2025, at the age of 65 after suffering a brain stroke. He was best known for his comedy series Chhankata and comedy roles in various Punjabi films. The actor, known for his flawless acting, was undergoing treatment in Mohali before passing away.
Jaswinder Bhalla started his career as an Assistant Professor
Born on May 4, 1960, in Ludhiana, Jaswinder Bhalla received his education from Senior Secondary School Doraha in Ludhiana. He then went on to pursue a BSc from Punjab Agricultural University, which was followed by an MSc. He also proceeded to earn a PhD in agricultural science. Jaswinder’s father was a primary school teacher in village Barmalipur.
Just like his father, Jaswinder also went on to pursue a career in teaching. He took up the role of an Assistant Professor at the Punjab Agricultural University. He later went on to become the head of the department. Jaswinder’s teaching career spanned many years, and throughout the years, he not only taught his students but also balanced his career in the entertainment world.

It was Jaswinder Bhalla’s innate ability to balance teaching with humour which made him stand out among his students. Despite his retirement in 2020, his students remembered him as one of the most inspiring professors.

In 1975, Jaswinder, along with his friends, was selected for All India Radio after they gained attention for performing at a cultural festival. While studying, he was active in drama and performed comedy skits at the university. After he began teaching, Jaswinder, along with his friend, started performing with the audio cassette Chhankata 1988.
In the Chhankata series, Jaswinder performed many characters from the Punjabi society. Two of his characters, ‘Chacha Chatar Singh’ and ‘Bhana’ became so popular that soon Jaswinder became a household name. Other popular characters portrayed by Jaswinder in the Chhankata series were ‘JB’ and ‘Taya Fumhan Singh’.
Jaswinder Bhalla gained huge recognition in Punjabi cinema
Since Jaswinder Bhalla was already a renowned name, when he made his silver screen debut with the film, Mahaul Theek Hai, in 1999, his popularity skyrocketed. In his long career, Jawinder went on to act in many Punjabi films, and some of his notable performances include Carry On Jatta, Jatt and Juliet, Yaar Anmulle, Mr and Mrs 420, Mundeyan Ton Bachke Rahin, Jihne Mera Dil Luteya and Aappan Pher Milange.
Jaswinder Bhalla garnered attention not only for his comic acts, but also for all his characters, which are references to society. With his satire, he questioned the social evils like female foeticide, drugs and unemployment.
Talking about his personal life, Jaswinder Bhalla got married to Parmdeep Bhalla, who is a fine-arts teacher. The duo had two children, Pukhraj Bhalla and a daughter named Ashpreet Kaur, who is married in Norway.

Just like his father, Jaswinder Bhalla’s son, Pukhraj Bhalla, is also an actor and a singer. He made his acting debut with the film, Stupid 7 in 2013, after which he continued to appear in numerous films. His notable works include Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree, Haterz, and Teriyaan Meriyaan Hera Pheriyan.
