Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s rumoured relationship has been ruling the headlines for many decades now. The rumours, which started in the year 1976 during the making of their film, raised many eyebrows. Amitabh was already married, and Rekha was labelled the ‘other woman’. It is one of the most scandalous affairs in Bollywood’s history.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra recalls meeting Amitabh Bachchan for the first time along with Rekha
Vidhu Vinod Chopra is one of the most prolific filmmakers in Bollywood. However, he too had his share of struggles in the industry. In a throwback chat with News 18, Vidhu recalled his first meeting with superstar Amitabh Bachchan. It was on the sets of the 1977 film, Alaap, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, that the budding filmmaker met Amitabh Bachchan for the first time.
Since the film starred Amitabh and Rekha, the actress was also present there. Vinod wanted to show his film to Mr Bachchan and told everyone that he had booked the screening place until 5 p.m., and the film could be watched only then.

In the same interaction, Vidhu revealed that during the shoot, an argument took place, and he felt that since it was already 4, nobody was interested in watching his film. At that time, he felt Mr Bachchan’s hand on his shoulder, and the veteran actor had a favour to ask. Recalling the same, he said:
“He asked if he could bring a friend along with him, and the friend was Rekha. He was angry because of the argument earlier, and we all got into the famous trailer.”
When Amitabh Bachchan stopped working with Rekha
After three years of Amitabh and Jaya’s wedding, rumours about his affair with Rekha started doing the rounds, which impacted his marital life with Jaya. Once, in a throwback interview with Stardust, Rekha recalled an incident when she saw Jaya crying while watching the love scenes between Amitabh and Rekha in the film, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar.
In an explosive throwback interview with Filmfare in 1984, Rekha reacted to Amitabh Bachchan’s denial of their relationship. Rekha revealed that Mr Bachchan is old-fashioned and would not do anything to hurt the sentiments of his wife, Jaya Bachchan. Elaborating on the same, she said:
“If he’d reacted that way towards me in private, I would have been very disappointed. But has he ever done that? I ask you. So why should I care about what he’s said in public? I know people must be saying bechari Rekha, pagal hai us par, phir bhi dekho. Maybe I deserve that pity. Not that he has 10 rollicking affairs! Mr Bachchan is still old-fashioned. He doesn’t want to hurt anybody, so why hurt his wife?”
