Former opener Virender Sehwag has backed the Indian team to dominate once again in the Asia Cup under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy. The tournament is set to be the first major assignment for Suryakumar as the captain of the Indian team, after taking over from Rohit Sharma after the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The Mumbai batter is unbeaten as India’s T20I captain, winning four of the five series he has led the side. Speaking to Sony Sports, Sehwag said that the Indian team is the right mix of youth and experience. The former opener feels that Suryakumar’s attacking mindset suits the T20 format perfectly and if the team can mirror their captain’s intent, then India will win the title.

“This Indian team has the right mix of youth and experience, and under Surya’s fearless leadership, they can dominate Asia once again. His attacking mindset suits the T20 format perfectly, and if the team plays with the same intent, I have no doubt India can lift the trophy,” Sehwag said.

‘We’ll give fans a day they’ll never forget’

Sehwag was speaking as part of broadcaster Sony Sports Network’s ‘RagRagMeinBharat’ campaign for the upcoming tournament. The former Indian opener recalled his time playing in the tournament and said that the team always looked to give fans a day they’ll never forget.

“One of my fondest memories of the Asia Cup is walking into the dressing room on match days and feeling the buzz even before stepping onto the field. You could hear the chants outside, feel the energy in every corner. I remember telling my teammates – today we won’t just play a match, we’ll give the fans a day they’ll never forget. That electrifying energy and that unity, is exactly what this campaign by Sony Sports Network is about. It captures how, in those moments, every cheer, every clap, and every heartbeat across the country beats for India,” said Sehwag.

India will start their campaign in the Asia Cup 2025 on September 10 against the UAE.
