Serena Williams recently opened up about her weight loss journey in an interview with People and an Instagram post. She revealed that she lost 14 kilograms (31 pounds) with the help of a GLP-1 medication. For those unaware, it is a drug designed to aid weight loss and manage blood sugar levels. The Tennis champion admitted that her journey wasn’t instant or easy, as she initially used the medication inconsistently before fully committing to the routine. Amid this, some fans pulled out her earlier pictures from her Instagram handle and compared them with her latest ones where her abs left eveyone stunned.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone that is released after eating. It helps to reduce appetite, slows the stomach emptying, and prompts insulin release. Although it is prescribed for obesity and diabetes, it can also be used to shift towards a healthier lifestyle when combined with a proper diet and exercise. Serena revealed she had earlier taken the drug due to her partnership with a healthcare company. However, she did not faced any side-effects from it. Sharing her views on her Instagram handle, she penned:
“Taking care of yourself isn’t a weakness, it’s a power. I’ve never been about shortcuts, not in my career, and not in my health. I’m on a GLP-1 because it was the right tool to help me feel healthy.”
Did Serena Williams take a shortcut with weight loss medication?
Serena was transparent about why she chose this method. After the birth of her second daughter, Adira, via emergency C-section, she struggled to lose the weight gained during pregnancy. The tennis star tried workouts, high-step routines, and experimented with multiple diets like vegan, vegetarian, and even high-protein plans. But none of them worked. The medication was not a shortcut but a practical way for her to find a balance after years of professional athletic activity and the physical demands of motherhood. Sharing her approach to Today, she said:
“A misconception is that it’s a shortcut. As an athlete and as someone who has done everything, I just couldn’t get my weight to where I needed to be at a healthy place, and believe me, I don’t take shortcuts.”
