A Village Administrative Officer (VAO) in Tamil Nadu has claimed that she was attacked after intervening in illegal sand mining in Namakkal district. The incident has prompted police to register a case.

Sivagami, VAO of Paalamedu in Thiruchengodu Circle, said she received a tip-off about illegal sand mining on Tuesday morning and went to the site to stop the activity.

“I informed them that sand mining without permission would not be allowed. But they called one Munjanur Srinivasan, who threatened me, saying he would take the sand and even kill me with a truck if I intervened,” she said. She reportedly lodged a complaint with the Tahsildar.

Sivagami further alleged that Srinivasan called her husband, threatening her and making derogatory remarks about her personal life.

Srinivasan then reportedly came to her home that night, where he allegedly assaulted her by pulling her hair, kicking her in the chest, and pushing her down. She sustained an arm injury and lost consciousness due to a spike in blood pressure. Relatives intervened and handed Srinivasan over to the police.

Elachipalayam Police have registered a case under various sections of the BNS, and section 4 of the Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Investigation is ongoing.
