It’s been nearly 10 years since The Chanels were introduced to the world. And Scream Queens‘ boss is opening up about why there should’ve been more airtime with the unfiltered group of characters.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter tied to his Emmy nominations for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Ian Brennan, who created Scream Queens along with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, says he would “totally” want to revisit the show and believes it was canceled too soon after two seasons, as well as their musical-comedy Glee.

“I think that is the layup of all layups. Honestly, both shows were canceled prematurely, particularly Scream Queens,” Brennan says. “It was really at the end of network [television] and the rise of streaming. A network executive could have been forgiven for being like, ‘The ratings keep going down.’ But they would do this all the time. They’d cancel a show that was getting like a one and then replace it with something that got a point seven, and now they would give their eyeteeth for the ratings we were getting then.”

Scream Queens starred Emma Roberts, Ariana Grande, Billie Lourd, Abigail Breslin, Lea Michele (as Kappa Kappa Tau sorority girls aka The Chanels), Skyler Samuels, Keke Palmer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Glen Powell, Nick Jonas and Niecy Nash trying to escape a killer on campus known as the Red Devil. Season two, which included a new setting and killer, added John Stamos and Taylor Lautner to the ensemble.

Before it was canceled, Brennan says ideas were circulating about where he wanted to go for a third season. “It was such a fun, funny show. And we had really good ideas for where it could go next,” he recalls. “What was great about that show was that you get to send up all the horror tropes. The first one was college girls. The second one was macabre body horror, a hospital setting, but actually, we were tasked with putting it in that section. What we were going to do in the second season, which I would probably do in a third, would be to set it at a camp. Scream Queens would be set at a Friday the 13th camp.”

While Brennan says it’s “too bad that didn’t get a third season,” he reflects on its cast, specifically, on how Powell’s fame since the show (which was pre-Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You and Twisters) has ascended him into becoming a household name.

“I mean, Glen Powell, who’s now the movie star of all movie stars, every time I see him, he’s like, ‘You know the thing I get remembered for the most? It’s Chad Radwell,’” he says.

Even though Chad, who was the hilarious yet douchey boyfriend of Robert’s Chanel Oberlin (Spoiler Alert!), died in season two, Brennan notes, “But didn’t Dexter just do that? Hasn’t Dexter killed off and brought back characters?”

He continues, “When something gets yanked off the air prematurely, you’re like, ‘Oh, it wasn’t any good, I guess.’ And for the longest time, I was like, ‘Aw, I wish that show was better.’ And then it’s funny talking about it. When I say that to people, they’re like, ‘What are you talking about? I love that show! And I wish it was still on the air.’ So, we’ll see, you never know.”
