Ditching Trump’s GOP for a new party would be a ‘huge mistake’: Vance to Musk

US Vice President JD Vance has warned Elon Musk against breaking away from Donald Trump’s Republican Party, saying it would be “a huge mistake” for the billionaire to press ahead with plans to launch a new political party.

Appearing on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle on Wednesday, Vance dismissed a Wall Street Journal report claiming he had spoken with Musk about a potential 2028 presidential run. “That story is completely fake,” he said flatly.

But the vice president saved his words for Musk’s flirtation with a new political party. “It would be a huge mistake,” Vance warned. “Whether you like it or not, you are now perceived by the far left as on the side of the American right the idea that Elon is ever going to go back where Democrats and Republicans both like him, that’s not going to happen.”

Instead, Vance urged Musk to pour his influence into reshaping the GOP rather than splintering it. “If he doesn’t like things the Republican party is doing, my advice to Elon would be try to fix the Republican party Elon would make a much bigger difference if he stayed loyal to President Trump’s Republican party.”

In July, Elon Musk said he had started a new political party, though he has not provided any details or explained what steps he has taken. It’s also unclear how this might affect upcoming elections. The fissures between Trump and his one-time top surrogate and Department of Government Efficiency cost-cutter-in-chief have exposed not only the fragile nature of relations between two of the country’s most visible personalities.

Trump dismissed Musk’s idea of political party as “ridiculous,” saying the Republican Party was already a “tremendous success.” He later wrote on social media that Musk had gone “off the rails” and was turning into a “train wreck,” warning that third parties only bring “disruption and chaos.”

For now, Vance says, there’s only one path for Musk if he wants influence in Washington: not building something new, but sticking with the old.
