Filming for Pawel Pawlikowski’s Sandra Hüller-starring film, 1949, is underway in Poland, Germany and Italy.
Principal photography has begun on the Oscar winner’s next project, written by Pawlikowski and Henk Handloegten, Mubi confirmed Tuesday.
Set at the height of the Cold War, 1949 stars The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall‘s Hüller as Erika, an actress, journalist and rally driver embarking on a road trip from U.S.-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar with her father, Thomas (Hanns Zischler), a writer. August Diehl, Anna Madeley, Devid Streisow and Theo Trebs also feature.
“In 1949, Pawlikowski picks up where he left off with his award-winning Ida and Cold War,” a statement from Mubi read, “exploring the themes of identity, guilt, family and love, amid the turmoil and moral confusion of post-war Europe.”
The film is produced by Mubi and OUR Films’ Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli as well as Extreme Emotions’ Ewa Puszczynsk, Nine Hours’ Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Berger, Chapter2’s Dimitri Rassam and Circle One’s Lorenzo Gangarossa.
Pawlikowski reunites with his longtime filmmaking team, which includes the Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lukasz Zal, costume designer Aleksandra Staszko, editor Piotr Wójcik, production designers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński and composer Marcin Marsecki.
Pawlikowski’s Ida accrued 70 international awards upon its 2013 release, including five European Film Awards and the 2015 Academy Award for best foreign language film. He was nominated for best director at Cannes in 2018 for Cold War, which had 52 wins and 126 nominations in total, including Academy Award nominations for best foreign film, best director and best cinematography.
