ChacoNation, rise — the popular outdoor sandal brand is launching a contest to find the next design for a sandal strap.
The two-week competition called Designapalooza, running through Sept. 1, welcomes people to submit original designs to be considered as the strap of a limited-edition Z/1 Classic sandal. The winning designer will not only claim a piece of Chaco history, but will also take home a $5,000 cash prize. Participants should be U.S. residents who are 13+, and each person can submit one design; submissions can include original hand-drawn, digital or textile-based designs.
“For years, we’ve seen ChacoNation use our straps to tell stories, rep their identities, and celebrate the outdoors. Now we’re handing over the design table to them,” said Rose Fulbright, Chaco marketing director, in a statement. “Designapalooza is a celebration of individuality, and the creative spirit that defines Chaco. We can’t wait to see the stories our community brings to life.”
Chaco will evaluate submissions to determine a group of five finalists. Each finalist will collaborate with Chaco to refine the sandal, selecting design elements including buckle color and thread to round out the shoe. The winner of Designapalooza will ultimately be chosen by ChacoNation, with a vote taking place on Instagram.

In addition to putting together a competition spotlighting its Z/1 style, Chaco has launched multiple collaborations featuring the sandal lately. In July, a collection created in partnership with Waffle House came out, and in June the brand released a collection with the family of Bob Marley.
The brand previously made a collection inspired by a musician through a collaboration with Thomas Rhett which launched in 2021.
