Netflix India, in collaboration with the National Association for the Blind, hosted a special pre-release screening of The Great Indian Kapil Show (Independence Day Special Episode) for visually impaired audiences, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive storytelling. The screening, held at the Netflix India office in Mumbai, featured built-in audio descriptions, enabling attendees to fully experience the show.

The event saw the participation of dignitaries including Shri Tukaram Mundhe, IAS, Secretary of the Divyang Kalyan Department, Government of Maharashtra, and Mr. Prakash Magdum, IIS, Managing Director of the National Film Development Corporation of India. Fans were also treated to a surprise appearance by the show’s cast—Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda, and Archana Puran Singh—alongside a curated talent showcase by members of the blind community.
Speaking about the initiative, Kapil Sharma said, “As performers, there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing your work can reach more hearts. Being part of this special screening, where every joke, every moment could be felt and experienced equally, was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do. I’m truly glad to have been part of it. Entertainment sabke liye hain aur agar accessibility ke dwara sab humaare show ko anubhav kar sakte hain, isse behtar kya hoga.”
Dr. Vimal Kumar Dengla, Hon. Secretary General, National Association for the Blind, added, “Entertainment should be for everyone, and when platforms like Netflix prioritise accessibility, it opens up a world of entertainment for our community. Audio description is more than a feature; its inclusion in action. We truly appreciate this collaboration and hope to see many more such initiatives in the future.”
Shri Tukaram Mundhe highlighted the broader social impact, stating, “Accessibility is not just assistance – it is empowerment, inclusion, and connection. Technology like audio descriptions ensures that our visually impaired brothers and sisters can experience cinema fully. Netflix and the National Association for the Blind have shown what compassion and innovation can achieve together, and I thank them for this initiative. The Government of Maharashtra is committed to working with all stakeholders, to ensure that no one is left behind in our cultural experiences… Together, let us lead with heart, innovate with purpose, and rise as one. Mr. Prakash Magdum emphasized cinema’s inclusivity, saying, “Cinema is an audiovisual medium we experience together, and when we say ‘together,’ everyone should be included… Netflix’s initiative is truly commendable, and a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together.”
Tanya Bami, Series Head, Netflix India, added, “Storytelling feels complete only when everyone has the opportunity to be a part of it… It’s been a truly humbling experience, one that inspires us to keep growing and learning.”
