In a major boost to the city’s urban transport infrastructure, the much-awaited Yellow Line of Kolkata Metro has received the mandatory safety clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). The line will connect Kolkata International Airport (Jai Hind Bimanbandar) to Noapara via Dum Dum Cantonment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate three new metro lines, including the yellow line, August 22. The other two lines that are set to be inaugurated are – green line (Esplanade to Sealdah stretch), and orange line (Ruby to Beliaghata stretch). According to sources, following the inauguration of three new Metro line, the Prime Minister likely to hold a rally in Dumdum area on the same day.

Sumeet Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety (Northern Frontier Circle), conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Dum Dum Cantonment to Jai Hind Bimanbandar stretch on August 16. The inspection included thorough assessments of critical sub-systems such as tracks, trains, and emergency response mechanisms — all essential for initiating passenger operations.

A trolley inspection was also carried out by the CRS from Dum Dum Cantonment to Jai Hind Bimanbandar Metro stations. Additionally, a speed trial run from Jai Hind Bimanbandar to Noapara and back was conducted successfully in the presence of the CRS and senior Metro Railway officials.

Anuj Mittal, Principal Chief Engineer of Metro Railway, along with other senior personnel, was present during the inspection. Following the review, the CRS expressed satisfaction with the operational readiness of the newly constructed section.

With the formal sanction from CRS now in place, the stretch from Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar is all set for commissioning. The inauguration of this Metro line is expected to be carried out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to Kolkata.
