Saif, where will you be on your birthday?
At a friend’s house for a small dinner with just six of us. We’ll cook and enjoy the best wine we can get hold of — but only a glass or two, since I’m already training for the film that will start very soon.

55 and raring to go — would that be an accurate signature song for your birthday?
Fifty-five feels like a great age. I feel strong, capable, with some experience too. There’s this sense that I’ve worked my way into a good space personally and financially, so I can almost stop worrying as much about the usual things and just relax, knowing things will be okay… until they aren’t, of course.
Is there anything you haven’t done so far that you’d like to?
I’d love to play the guitar better and do more gigs. It’s amazing fun, and there are so many people who’d help with music and a band. Also, I’d like to continue doing good roles in films. I feel blessed to have such a creative job that I love so much and to still be offered meaningful lead parts.
What else is on the Wishlist?
I’d like to travel more — nature and health-focused holidays mixed with food and wine with good friends. The key is balance! Focus on health a bit more, but not too much.
Are you happy to see your two elder children step into the same profession as yours?
My kids always have my support. Of course, I’d love them to have stable jobs and a good college education. But the lure of the big screen is strong. Acting is a great job, but it can get rough and tough, and I’d like to spare them that. Still… it’s their choice.
Do you regret not following your father into cricket?
Not really. Cricket is a great game, and it’s still our family sport. I love everything about proper cricket. But I love acting. At least I can still do it at 55 and even get better at it. Which sport allows that?
Which of your films are your favourites?
Hum Tum was an early rom-com for India, maybe the first? A game-changer in that sense. Omkara too — a mainstream hero taking on a negative role. Dil Chahta Hai was also a game-changer. Then Ek Haseena Thi, Sacred Games, and Race. I’ve always tried to be versatile and play different parts. Beyond that, I haven’t thought too much about it.
What should we expect from you next?
Priyadarshan’s thriller with Akshay will be fun. Hopefully, some more good work. God willing, more of the same! I’m very happy with how things are.
You have a beautiful family, a successful career, and a seemingly charmed life. What’s the downside?
Family is beautiful, yes, and life does feel charmed. But I’m not hugely wealthy — all this is relative. It’s taken me a lifetime to build everything by myself, and I’m very proud of that. Of course, there have been unfortunate patches, and it’s not all roses, but mostly, yes, it is! The good thing is, knives don’t work on me — ha ha.
Who among your children is your favourite?
I’m blessed. My kids all love me — Sara, Ibrahim, Tim, and Jeh. My sisters and Mum love me. I’ve got really good friends from school days, and my wife Kareena is the most amazing woman I know. Truly blessed, no doubt about it.
Looking back, are you content with what you’ve achieved so far?
The main thing for me was to have a steady job and never have to ask my parents for money. I’ve managed that and more. The rest is all a bonus.
