US President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Washington amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The meeting is being described as a significant diplomatic win for Putin, who received a red carpet welcome despite having ICC warrants against him. The talks, which extended from a planned 30 minutes to nearly three hours, concluded with no agreement on a ceasefire. Following the summit, Trump stated there is “no deal right now” and that he would not impose additional sanctions on Russia. Putin flattered his counterpart, stating the war “would not have happened if President Trump was in charge.” While a big sticking point reportedly remains, Putin has invited Trump to Moscow, signaling a potential warming of relations from Russia’s perspective.
