A Delhi University graduate has shared an unfiltered take on the highs and lows of college societies, and it has resonated widely with users online.

In his now-viral post on LinkedIn, Varun Saini recalled how society’s work comes with its share of challenges that often make one consider quitting, but at the same time, offers lessons that make the grind worthwhile.

“Welcome to society life in DU. No stipend. No off days. Still worked like maniacs. Here’s my journey so far – 1st year: I became the Joint Secretary of Maths Department in my very first year,” Saini wrote.

He went on: “Straight into a challenge! Managing events, working with seniors, and figuring out how to lead without really knowing how. 2nd year: I became an Event Head. I was leading a team of 20 or more.”

By then, the responsibilities had only grown heavier. “Now I was expected to know things – how to handle crises, last-minute changes, how to keep the team motivated when nothing was going right. Then I got the feel – ‘yeh sirf society nahi, yeh toh ek full-time internship hai‘,” he added.

His third year cemented the experience: “Crisis management – jugaad skills – team dynamics. 3rd year: Became the go-to person for everything. Also the support system when juniors said: ‘Bhaiya, ek help chaiye.’ Best part? Watching your team glow up the way you once did.”

Saini also had a message for students still navigating society life: “You didn’t just attend college. You learned something here. And if you’re still in your 1st or 2nd year wondering ‘mujhse hoga kya?’ The answer’s simple: ‘bilkul hoga. Bas haarna mat‘.”

Take a look at the viral LinkedIn post here:

LinkedIn users related strongly to his post. “Can truly relate with ‘bhaiya ek help chahiye’. You were always there for us no matter what. Don’t know how to thank you,” said one user, seemingly a junior of Saini.

Another user wrote, “Love how you’ve shared your experience! Your post is giving me the confidence to take the first step and join a society! Thanks for sharing.”

One of the users said: “Can totally relate with the statement yeh society nhi full-time internship hai just without stipend.”

Whether you call it unpaid labour or a crash course in management, DU’s society life clearly leaves no one without stories, and Varun Saini’s post proves just that.
