After three seasons of mixed reviews, And Just Like That, the sequel to the beloved Sex and the City, has officially wrapped up. But instead of ending on a high note, the show left many fans scratching their heads due to a bizarre toilet scene in the show’s finale. The ikky scene left users feeling disgusted, and it quickly went viral for all the wrong reasons. Now, And Just Like That‘s showrunner, Michael Patrick, has opened up about it.
And Just Like That’s showrunner opens up about the bizarre Toilet scene in the finale
And Just Like That came under controversy when a weird toilet scene from the show went viral. It took place at a dinner party where a toilet overflows, and the camera lingers on the mess, a detail many viewers found disgusting and unnecessary. Fans took to social media to call it ‘insulting,’ ‘lazy writing,’ and even claimed it made them “want to vomit.”
After years of struggling to capture the magic of ‘Carrie Bradshaw’s earlier adventures, the toilet fiasco felt, to many, like a symbol of why the show never truly lived up to its predecessor. Now, its showrunner, Michael Patrick King, has reacted to the scene in an interview with Variety. He defended the choice to add the scene in the series intentionally and said:
“We cannot take ourselves too seriously. For the gorgeousness of Carrie’s sparkly top and tulle skirt, that’s the high; the low is a toilet filled up with sh**. Because guess what? Being single, there’s a lot of sh**, and relationships are a lot of sh**. It’s a comedy, with drama, romance, and a fairy tale.”
Why happens with ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ in And Just Like That‘s finale?
And Just Like That‘s finale aired on Thursday, also left ‘Carrie’ alone, once again. After the death of her husband ‘Big’ and another breakup with ‘Aidan’, the show ended with Sarah Jessica Parker’s character dancing in her apartment, seemingly content with her independence. King explained that it was a “call and response” to Sex and the City’s 2004 finale, where every main character ended up in a relationship. This time, he wanted to highlight Carrie’s self-reliance.

Why did And Just Like That ended?
And Just Like That‘s end is linked by fans to its poor numbers. Its ratings had steadily declined since its grand 2021 premiere. Reports claimed it showed a 62 percent drop by the third season. Many fans called out the show for its awkward dialogue, inconsistent tone, and over-the-top storylines. The absence of fan-favorite ‘Samantha Jones’ (Kim Cattrall) was also a reason why the audience never fully accepted the show without her. Although Michael states that the show’s end comes down to a creative call, the low viewership numbers gave a reason to the producers not to push it further.
