Incessant rain since Friday night lashed Mumbai, flooding roads, disrupting daily life, and claiming two lives, officials said on Saturday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its warning and issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad district, forecasting extremely heavy rain at isolated places.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said two people were killed and two were injured when a landslide hit at a residential society in Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli West. Rescue teams are at the scene to clear debris.
Waterlogging was reported in several neighbourhoods, including Sion, Kurla, Chembur and Andheri. On Shanmukhanand Hall Road in Sion, about one to one-and-a-half feet of water accumulated.
Vehicles were stranded on the Western Express Highway. Civic bodies authorities also shut the Andheri subway due to flooding, affecting commuter movement.
In the 21 hours between 8:30 a.m. Friday and 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Vikhroli recorded 248.5 mm of rain, followed closely by Santacruz (232.5 mm) and Sion (221 mm).
