The Ayan Mukerji-directed War 2 has finally found some momentum on its second day, thanks to the Independence Day holiday boost. As per early estimates, the Hindi version is heading towards a Rs. 38 to Rs. 40 crore Friday, registering a healthy 42% growth over its opening day numbers. The spike was primarily driven by strong traction in the mass belts, where footfalls were far more encouraging than on Day 1.
The national holiday brought in higher occupancies right from the morning shows, with single screens in Tier-2 and Tier-3 centres seeing the most noticeable gains. However, such an upsurge is typical for big releases on Independence Day and may not be a reliable indicator of long-term trend. The Hindi version continues to have a very limited presence in Nizam / Andhra due to the dominance of the Telugu version – a release strategy that has capped its potential in those circuits.
With this, War 2 is poised to close its two-day Hindi total in the Rs. 68-70 crore range, still far below the expectations for a Rs. 400 crore budget spectacle. While this holiday-led jump will give the film some breathing room going into the weekend, the challenge lies in sustaining business once the holiday effect wears off. Janmashtami on Saturday may help certain mass pockets maintain higher-than-normal occupancy, but the Telugu version is expected to witness a sharp drop.
For now, War 2 heads into the weekend riding holiday momentum – whether it can convert that into genuine box office legs remains the big question.
